Chapter 128
This time, perhaps because the medicine was properly made, some memories had returned. Everything from how she first met Ares to how they ended up getting married.
However, she regained consciousness just before she could recall why the accident happened and who was behind it, so she couldn’t remember anything after that.
While it was frustrating to wake up right before the most crucial part, she was also relieved to be awake now, thinking of how worried Ares and Sasha must have been.
“Your stubbornness is really something else.”
Ares clicked his tongue, watching Kirine sitting up against the headboard. At his obvious scolding, Kirine raised her eyebrows.
“If you’re going to keep talking about that, just leave.”
Even though she insisted she was fine now, Ares still made Kirine rest at home for a week. Initially, he had insisted on at least two weeks of rest, and it took a lot of convincing to reduce it to just one week.
“You think I want to do this? I’m doing this because I’m worried about you.”
“You’re overprotective.”
She wished he would save that kind of treatment for Sasha, but Ares wouldn’t hear of it and handed Kirine her medicine.
“Never mind that, just take your medicine.”
Though he passed her the medicine and water glass as if annoyed, Ares watched intently until Kirine took her medicine properly.
“You’re persistent.”
“Then hurry up and get better.”
“I told you I’m already better.”
Kirine retorted curtly at Ares, who was still looking at her disapprovingly, as she took the medicine with water.
“By the way, where’s Sasha?”
“I got her ready this morning and sent her to the education facility.”
“Don’t you have training?”
Come to think of it, she’d only seen him around the house these past few days, which made her wonder.
Just as she was about to tell him he could go if he had other things to do, Ares responded as if it were absurd:
“How could I go to training when you’re here?”
“I really am fine.”
“Stop saying you’re fine already.”
Ares snapped irritably and felt Kirine’s forehead.
“You still have a fever.”
With that, he urged her to lie down quickly. Seeing how he looked ready to stand there watching until she lay down, Kirine grumbled but complied and got into bed.
“You nag too much.”
“If you don’t like it, then don’t get sick.”
“This isn’t being sick, it’s just the medicine…”
“Fine, just lie down quietly and sleep.”
As Ares cut her off as if he didn’t need to hear any more, Kirine glared at him quietly for a moment before rolling her red eyes.
“Ares.”
“Yes, go to sleep.”
“No, that’s not it.”
Perhaps because she had been asleep for so long, it wasn’t easy to adjust to reality even after waking up. It felt like she was disconnected from everything, and it took quite some time to get used to things.
As if sensing her inner thoughts, Ares stayed by her side, attentively caring for her while forcing her to rest.
“I remember some things now.”
“What?”
Sitting in the chair beside her, intending to watch until she fell asleep, Ares’s eyes widened in surprise.
“Exactly what do you remember?”
“Up until just before the carriage accident.”
“Do you know who caused it?”
“Just suspicions.”
Before Ares could ask who she suspected, Kirine cut him off.
“I’ll tell you when I’m sure.”
“If you say so.”
Seeing how she obviously wouldn’t answer even if he asked who it was, Ares reluctantly nodded.
“Don’t you have anything you want to ask me?”
“Why suddenly?”
“Well, since I said I remember some things, I thought you might have questions.”
When she first lost her memories, she had been desperately curious about how they ended up married and had Sasha.
Understanding this, Kirine offered to answer any questions as if doing him a favor, but Ares seemed rather indifferent.
“I already know most of it, though not everything.”
“How much do you know?”
Though she asked, thinking he couldn’t possibly know more than her, Ares acted as if he knew all the important parts.
“Well, if I know why I fell for you and why I wanted to marry you, that’s all I need to know.”
“…”
“Why? Is there something else I should know?”
At his tone suggesting there might be something lacking, Kirine pressed her lips together and pulled the blanket up to her neck.
“No, that’s enough.”
***
As Kirine’s body improved and she adjusted to reality, Ares finally allowed her to leave the room.
Though Kirine had complained to Ares about what felt like house arrest, she knew he was doing it out of concern, so she only grumbled without getting truly angry. Besides, the joy of waiting for Sasha at home made staying there not too difficult or boring.
While Sasha was initially worried about Kirine recovering at home, she seemed to enjoy being greeted upon return, often falling into Kirine’s embrace with a bright smile.
‘I can’t keep living like this forever.’
Though her body had almost recovered and she wanted to return to the palace, she couldn’t even properly bring it up because Ares would give her a reproachful look at the slightest hint.
‘How do I tell them I think Vincent caused the accident?’
She was certain she had heard Vincent’s voice at the end. But without concrete evidence, it was difficult to say she suspected him.
‘No matter how I think about it, it doesn’t make sense.’
She couldn’t understand why Vincent would do such a thing to her and Ares.
He could resent her. Since their relationship had been completely severed, he might want to hurt her and seek revenge.
But she was angry and frustrated about why he had to involve Ares too.
‘I need to find evidence somehow.’
She thought it would be best to honestly tell Ares today that she suspected Vincent and work together to find a solution.
As she waited, determined to be honest with Ares when he returned from his brief visit to the palace, a letter arrived from an unexpected person.
It was a letter from Vincent.
